Hardwood/pre-engineered wood plank

Real hardwood floors are comprised of wood planks that are shaved down to uniform or near-uniform thickness and installed directly over floor joists. Wood flooring planks are harvested from several tree species, such as maple, cherry, oak and walnut, offering a wide range of colors, grains and textures.

Hardwood is a long-lasting flooring option because you can refinish it multiple times. Furniture scratches, foot-traffic patterns and general wear-and-tear detract from its appearance, but refinishing hardwood flooring revives its dated look.

Installing hardwood flooring is typically more expensive than other flooring types, but hardwood adds value and creates a classic look that never goes out of style.

Flooring installers recommend installing wood flooring in rooms with low humidity because moisture may cause it to expand and contract.

wpc plank flooring

The “w” stands for wood, but the fact is the majority of WPC-type products entering the market today do not contain wood. WPC is a composite material made of thermoplastics, calcium carbonate and wood flour. Extruded as a core material, it is marketed as being waterproof, rigid and dimensionally stable. In an effort to differentiate their products, suppliers are branding their WPC offerings with names such as enhanced vinyl plank, engineered luxury vinyl flooring and waterproof vinyl.

WPC products have a distinct advantage because the rigid core hides subfloor imperfections. In addition, the rigid core allows for longer and wider formats.  The big advantage for WPC over laminate is that it is waterproof and suitable for environments in which laminate shouldn’t normally be used—typically bathrooms and basements that have potential moisture infiltration. In addition, WPC products can be installed in large rooms without an expansion gap every 30 feet, which is a requirement for laminate floors. The vinyl wear layer of WPC provides cushion and comfort and also absorbs the impact sound to make it a quiet floor.

laminate plank flooring

Laminate flooring is constructed in layers. The bottom layer is the "backing". It's designed to resist moisture that could cause boards to warp.  Above the backing is the inner core. The core is made from high-density fiberboard that is reinforced with a special resin to further enhance moisture resistance and increase durability.  Next is the image design layer. This is where the high-resolution image of wood, stone, metal, or other material appears.  The top layer is the wear layer. This layer protects the design from fading, scratches, and damage from everyday wear and tear.

Vinyl plank and sheet vinyl flooring

Vinyl plank is designed to resemble hardwood, and it comes in strips. You can find this product in a number of styles, each mimicking a specific type of wood, from oak to hickory and beyond. Because vinyl plank imitates hardwood, you’re sure to find a version that matches the rest of your home’s decor. Additionally, vinyl is the budget-friendly choice for renovators who want the look of hardwood without the challenging installation and cost.

Vinyl Sheet Flooring allows you to get a real stone or wood look an affordable price. This type of Sheet Vinyl Flooring is manufactured as one solid, continuous piece of Flooring that comes in a large roll, which can allow for a seamless installation depending on the size of your room. The benefit is you’ll have modern flooring that looks like real wood or tile, without joints or spaces that could trap moisture or soil. Many customers prefer Vinyl Sheet Flooring because it is budget-friendly, moisture resistant, low maintenance, plus it has antimicrobial protection to inhibit the growth of bacteria.
